Not quite yet, but things could be heading that way. Digitisation of the written word shifts the blockbuster books into hands quicker than a trip to the mall.

But then, where’s the independent bookstore in all of this?

Indie bookstores certainly don’t have an easy ride, going up against the big guys (or ‘big box bookstores’) is a tough one in itself, let alone in the rise of the digital page.

But there is still the niche for a smell of a page and the weight of a book, and Fleeting Pages, a Pittsburgh bookstore is one that still campaigns these desires.

And they take it a step further into the big box bookstore challenge by taking over the space of a dead Borders from April 30th.

Launching a pop-up ‘squat’, Fleeting Pages will take over the space of the dead Borders and fill it with ideas from their local creative community – all centred around the idea of ‘written self-expression’.

Declaring this idea late last month, the indie bookstore calls for ideas and people to create a 30 day calendar of events and fill the shelves with independent and self-published works.
